UK Extends Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Alert List with An additional 11 Countries
British government has placed an additional eleven further nations to its travel advisory register concerning the risks of industrial alcohol poisoning from contaminated beverages.
This updated warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a global increase in the frequency of reported cases" of methanol toxicity.
Only last month, the government had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, after several serious events like the deadly loss of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being warned that as little as small amounts of industrial alcohol can cause permanent eye damage or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.
What is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Employed?
Toxic alcohol is a harmful substance commonly utilized in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. This substance is not intended for drinking.
Although it is generated during the creation of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers bring it down to low, safe levels for drinking through the refining procedure.
Yet in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to save money, and as it is flavorless and smell-free, it is impossible to detect.
Official Advice for Travellers
Authorities official Hamish Falconer emphasized that every traveler should recognize the indicators of industrial alcohol poisoning.
"If you're having drinks overseas, opt for reputable establishments and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," the official advised.
"If something seems unusual, such as a headache that's much more severe than normal or sight issues – get medical help fast."
The entire roster of destinations noted as posing a risk of toxic alcohol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
