The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Adventure with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Preteen Love Story

In this animated adventure aimed at tweens, the fairy community focuses on collecting teeth from slumbering children and leaving treasure under their pillows. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He’s only a bit more curious about the underlying economics behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who provide metal in exchange. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the hideous gnome he had imagined.

An Unlikely Connection and Shared Threat

Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of teen romance (though it’s very much suitable for younger kids). The fairy and goblin communities are estranged from each other, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to bring people as one. Both groups portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet both maintain biased views about the other. The fairies are supposed to be self-centered types, prone to taking whatever they fancy, while the goblins are reportedly dim-witted, smelly, and primitive, but are actually bright and technologically advanced.

Of course, such a setup requires a common enemy to unite against, and this is duly provided in the form of some nasty spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they want to eat the goblins and fairies, and they serve as fairly bloodthirsty, if not particularly skilled, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

There aren’t very many children’s animations targeting the kind of audience that is beginning to have first crushes, but aren’t yet old enough for the content 14-year-olds view these days in lieu of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster falls into this age group, it probably won’t to be their next favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.

A Tooth Fairy Tale releases in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and the rest of the UK beginning October 24.
